Transforming NW Portland One Project at a Time
Join us for a presentation by Cairn Pacific co-founders, Rob Hinnen and Tom DiChiara, on the revitalization of the Conway Blocks in Northwest Portland. Hinnen and DiChiara will share Cairn Pacific’s integral role in developing the Conway Blocks, integrating urban mixed use, retail, office, and apartment projects to transform the neighborhood one development at a time. From the history of the site to the evolution that this northwest neighborhood has experienced in recent years, attendees will gain insights about this unique emerging neighborhood in addition to understanding Cairn Pacific's guiding principles of building thoughtful, authentic, enduring and noteworthy projects.
Thomas A. DiChiara, AIA
Principal and Co-Founder
Tom is a founding Principal of Cairn Pacific LLC. He is a registered architect with more than 20 years of design and development experience with multifamily, office, and commercial projects. Tom began his career designing mixed-use projects with GBD Architects in Portland. At GBD he was responsible for several award-winning projects, including the Brewery Blocks, Museum Place, the Belmont Dairy Rowhomes, and OSHU Wellness Center at South Waterfront. After working for GBD for ten years, Tom joined Trammell Crow Residential (TCR) where he developed more than 1,800 units of mixed-use, multifamily housing. When TCR spun off into Mill Creek Residential Trust, Tom served as its Managing Director.
In early 2011, Tom joined C.E. John Company, Inc., and was instrumental in building a successful multifamily mixed-use development platform and completed several notable projects in Northwest Portland. In spring of 2014, it was time to follow a new path, so Tom and longtime business partner Rob Hinnen decided to launch their own development company, Cairn Pacific LLC.
Robert A. Hinnen
Principal and Co-Founder
Rob is a founding Principal of Cairn Pacific LLC. He has been involved in development of commercial and multifamily real estate for more than 20 years, both as a real estate attorney and as a developer in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. With degrees from Whitman College and Harvard Law School, Rob began his real estate career working on real estate transactions and real estate lending with Ball Janik LLP and Stoel Rives LLP in Portland. In 1997, Rob decided to leave the practice of law and join one of his clients, Trammell Crow Residential (TCR), developing apartments and condominiums. While at TCR Rob developed two urban mixed-use buildings in partnership with C.E. John Company, Inc., a family-owned real estate company in Vancouver, Washington, and developed a close relationship with the John family. In 2010, Rob joined C.E. John Company, Inc., as its President. In early 2014, Rob decided to follow through on his long-held goal of founding his own real estate development company. He joined Tom DiChiara, head of development for C.E. John Company and Rob’s business partner for more than a decade, to launch Cairn Pacific LLC and continue developing sustainable, urban projects.
